April 30, 2014
Dear Donors, Supporters and Sponsors,
As you will know from the letter posted on this website a year ago, the Ottawa Public Library Foundation is being wound up, following a decision by the Foundation Board of Directors that the organization no longer had a useful role to play to support the Ottawa Public Library.
Following a request from the Foundation, the Canada Revenue Agency has revoked the Foundation’s charitable organization status, effective March 18, 2014. This step was taken once the Board of the Foundation had arranged, as per the Articles of Incorporation, to transfer the majority of the financial assets to the Community Foundation of Ottawa Ottawa Public Library Foundation Legacy Fund. This Legacy Fund has as its sole purpose to support the programs and services of the Ottawa Public Library. The annual earnings of the Legacy Fund, under the investment management of the Community Foundation, will support seniors’ programs, services and collections, childrens’ programs, services and collections and initiatives for newcomers.
It is expected that by December 31, 2014, all monies to the account of the Library Foundation will have been transferred to the Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation of Ottawa and the Legacy Fund will have close to $1 million in it. The Legacy Fund can and will be able to accept donations from previous Library Foundation donors and supporters and the Community Foundation will issue official income tax receipts for all eligible donations. You can make a donation to the Legacy Fund through www.CommunityFoundationofOttawa.ca
On behalf of the Ottawa Public Library Foundation thank you for your support over the years since the Foundation was created in 2001. Through your donations you have shown you believe in public libraries and life-long learning, and that you believe the Ottawa Public Library has a vital role to play in our community.
Farewell from Marc Binavince, Vicken Koundakjian, Hunter McGill, Jaclyn Reid-Ivany, Cindy Streefkerk and JC Sulzenko, the remaining members of the Library Foundation Board. To this list we should also add the late Lori Nash and the late John Dennison, both of whom served as Board members until their passing, committed to our shared vision and mission.
